Mobile Mapper 6 product update:
While they do not come with an actual paper manual or users guide, any one already familiar with a Windows Mobile Pocket PC will feel right at home with this little jewel. I was able to start collecting data after about an hour and I have no survey experience. Setting up the device is as standard as setting up any new hand held PC, you will want to key in the owner information, set the clock, sync to your PC for a software update search and adjust any attributes as you see fit.
- I am running rechargeable batteries in mine and needed to make an adjustment for that under the >Settings >Power >System >Battery Type.
- Some other adjustments I prefer are the small keys option for the pop up keyboard due to the fact you get a space bar on the alphabet side. You will learn the two different keypads offer different keys all together, some you will only see when you press shift and those keys will not exist on the other keypad.
- Unit has a 400 MHz processor, keep that in mind if you are moving down from a TDSNomador newer Ranger, if you are moving up, you will notice the wait between programs is much faster than what you previously worked with. Watch the top bar, as you close out programs when you are multi-tasking you can easily get ahead of your self and touch the X button twice and will inadvertently close another program running in the back ground.
- I have installed Google Maps, can’t get the GPS function supported and have not been able to install the Google Maps Mobile version yet. Mine only works when synced to me desktop via USB cable. Visit http://m.google.com/maps
- Currently we are trying to install Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 – we will keep you advised of those notes. As of June 28th – no luck.
- If you get a Bluetooth Error you will need to press the small reset button located to the left of the flashlight leds. Can’t get your flashlight to work? Read on, I will get to that later.
- I opted to go with ourStarter Kit that includes a larger stylus, screen guards, external antenna and car kit, plus a few other extras. The small stylus located below the LOG button is just to small to work comfortably with. You will like the USB and power adapter they thread into the unit with a retaining screw or snap into the vehicle windshield mount for quick removal.
- When you purchase your Magellan Mobile Mapper 6 or MM6 from Stakemill we will include starter programs for the Mobile Mapping software package, ArcPad programs are not yet available as we do not have a demo unit yet.
- Get your unit early, it can take a month or two to get one as the come from “Across the Pond” that’s France for you who don’t understand my humor.
- We also included with every on-line purchase from Stakemill.com a complete back up set of users guides in PDF format. You can preview the units and software features while you patiently wait for your unit to arrive by Air Post.
- Stakemillofferson-line training for those in need and we also offer on-line tutorials with the on-line training purchases. All of these services are of course available at our Florida location
- Viewable map setting – set your GPS to WGS84 UTM
- Advice – Most importantly, get advice on what software programs that will work with your Magellan Mobile Mapper 6 or DeLorme PN-20, we run both units and offer in store demos with the software, we are more than a dot com we are a real brick and mortar experience.
- I have not been able to get the internal GPS function to work with any add on GPS program, obviously I am doing something wrong, the >Settings Tab has a feature under >System that reads >External GPS which has three tabs. In the first tab >Programs you select the GPS Program Port that programs will use to obtain GPS data, choices are 0 through 9. Tab 2 >Hardware has a GPS Hardware Port to which the GPS device is connected, choices again are 0 through 9 and you can’t select the same port as tab 1, plus you also list the Baud rate. Tab 3 >Access has a way for Windows Mobile to manage the access to your GPS so multiple programs can obtain GPS data simultaneously. The tab allows you to let Windows Mobile to manage this info internally.
What is the difference between Windows Mobile and a Smart Phone?
A sure fire way to tell the difference between devices is to simply touch the screen. If your device has a touchscreen, it is a Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Pocket PC, if it doesn’t have a touchscreen, then it is a Windows Mobile Smartphone. Magellan Mobile Mappers run Windows Mobile 6.0 currently.
