Local eBay Seller Claims Online Sellers Have Run Instrument Prices Down For Him

December 21, 2011

In the 20+ years I have worked for Stakemill I have never heard such a ridiculous claim as I did today. We have been located in Largo for over 25 years, for the last four years we have been on the corner of US 19 North and 126th Ave (where they used to build the Checkers Drive Thru restaurants).  We have participated in online selling as well as selling through our retail store and with outside sales personnel going door to door.  About two years ago we had a new supplier or as we call a store-less supplier get into the Land Survey Instrument resale business in our city. Recently I had a discussion with a local supplier and we were discussing the visit of an instrument vendor stopping by to visit us this week and the comment they made about this local being out of business, one that I just saw selling on eBay.  It was confirmed that the eBay seller still exists, as they work from a storage shed located at a local church in our county, and they are still selling online only.  I was informed that this eBay seller thinks the Instrument vendor has ruined the market by having just anyone sell their line and they were one of the first to sell this line through their non-existent store and felt it unfair so they ceased dealings with this Instrument vendor.  So in a Readers Digest version of the story, its okay when you sell online and drive the price down, but when someone with no building, employees, utility bills, insurance bills, bank fees, merchant fees, employees salaries, vehicle expenses, phone system, forklifts, sign regulations, inventory reports, boxes, packing materials, network of PCs, service center, loaner units, demo models and oh yeah, inventory does it to them its unfair.

This has entreated me so much I have taken one of our GPS units from inventory to map out our location to their location and allow you the reader to see if this business has a legitimate complaint.  I will upload the map in Google Earth so you can see their facility and judge for yourself it they are a real supply shop as their name implies.  This is the first blog I have allowed you to comment on so please be truthful.

We also sell online, but we do not sell at cost, I know the end users wants a good deal but it is unfair when an established brick and mortar store provides a customer a product demo and the customer then goes back to the office and searches the product online and buys from a dot com that has minimal overhead.  They do not provide any of the support or product training but they close the sale and in turn have record sales levels with the manufactures thus making them appear to be movers and shakers in the industry when in fact they are in turn, degrading the product lines.

Public Health Assessment Teams Benefit from Handheld MobileMapper 6 Smart GNSS/GIS

January 19, 2011

A repost from geoplace.com about MobileMapper 6 units

Public Health Assessment Teams Benefit from Handheld MobileMapper 6 Smart GNSS/GIS

Interview teams assisted by Team Epi-Aid, an award-winning volunteer group at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health, are conducting cluster sampling studies using Ashtech handheld MobileMapper 6 smart GNSS/GIS devices to navigate to designated survey sites and collect point specific field data.

The cluster sampling studies, usually conducted by ten, two-person teams, are carried out under the auspices of the University of North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness Spatial Health Assessment and Research Program (SHARP). One example of an upcoming survey, which is being done in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), will study how the reproductive health needs of women may have been affected by the 2010 ravaging floods in coastal counties of North Carolina.

The Mobile Mapper 6 smart GNSS units were chosen for their cost-efficiency and ruggedness, according to Matthew Simon, UNC Center for Public Health Preparedness, GIS Analyst & Research Associate. “We’ve been able to buy two or even three of the MobileMapper 6 devices compared to the cost of single comparable competing unit. In addition, the MobileMapper 6 is very rugged and waterproof, has easily replaceable AA batteries and an integrated camera.”

The cluster sampling surveys, containing from 15 to 30 questions, are prepared in ArcPad Studio. Each MobileMapper 6 unit, running Windows Mobile OS and ArcPad, is loaded with the custom survey form and a street map layer with point designations. Each team uses the MobileMapper 6 to navigate to its assigned points. The points usually have a reverse geo-coded address associated with each point. When the team arrives at the specified point, a scripted survey form pops up with drop downs, check and text boxes to enable the teams to enter and record the answers to the survey.

Leica Geosystems Optical, Rotary Lasers, Measuring Instruments and Tripods at Stakemill

May 27, 2010

Florida surveyors now have a choice when it comes to Leica Geosystems

 That choice is  STAKEMILL

As one of Florida’s most established land survey suppliers, Leica Geosystems has approached Stakemill about offering Leica optical instruments, rotary lasers, precision measuring instruments, tripods, batteries, grade rods and numerous other items with the Leica Geosystems logo on them.  Stakemill is more than happy to offer a recognized brand name to join our already impressive multi line list of manufacturers.

Owner Sean Scully comments ”The local market has gaps from current suppliers and manufacturers need distributors focused in those markets, I can show you one competitor that has no game plan and another more worried about watching his competitors than his customers needs.  Those actions have resulted in Stakemill becoming the major reseller of land survey accessories in just five years here in Florida.  Had those two competitors stayed focused on what their prior leadership had accomplished, they would have kept us form excelling in an over saturated market.  I also feel that by having the same leadership in place with diverse strategies, Stakemill was able to position ourselves at the top.”

With the addition of Leica Geosystems Precision Instruments, Stakemill will continue to be the largest supplier of such suppliers as CST Berger, Seco, Crain, Kenwood, Presco Products, Elan, Rite in the Rain, National Printfast and others.  We hope to move our GPS sales into the six digit figures with our new addition of manufacturers.

Crain Tri-Max Standard Dual Clamp Tripod TRIMAX 90553

November 10, 2009

Crain Tri-Max Standard Dual Clamp Tripod TRIMAX 90553 ONLY $248.99 unitl Christmas

Tri-Max tripods are certified to meet or exceed ISO Certification Standards – making it the only tripod on the market with certifiable accuracy. All new Tri-Max tripods come equipped with a serial number on the hinge assuring you that the tripod has successfully passed all necessary testing and is certified to meet the ISO 12858-2-H standards.

Crain has now put the Tri-Max to the ultimate test, the ISO 12858-2-H. Not only did we test the Tri-Max, but we tested nine of the best selling tripods on the market. The results were gratifying; the Tri-Max was the only tripod that passed the test. We’re so convinced of the accuracy and stability that the Tri-Max can provide, we back it up with a 5-year warranty.

  • As instruments become more accurate, tripod stability becomes more important. The horizontal accuracy of any surveying instrument can be directly affected by the stability of the tripod used with it.
  • Without exception, no other tripod even comes close to delivering the stability and performance of the Tri-Max tripod!
  • The patented Tri-Max is truly a next generation tripod and is the only tripod that will truly meet your needs!
  • With rugged construction throughout, the design features premium materials including advanced fiberglass composite.
  • Try one for yourself; if in your professional judgment, you determine the Tri-Max. is not the best tripod available, we’ll refund your money! This money back guarantee on the Tri-Max is valid for 60 days, given the tripod is in “like-new” condition.
  • The Tri-Max outperforms all other tripods for functionality, special applications, accessories, and ergonomics.

The past half-century has seen an incredible evolution in surveying/positioning instrumentation; from one-minute theodolites to present day one-second total stations, GPS, laser systems, and now servo-driven, laser scanning, photogrammetry, robotic, and machine control systems.  Evolutions in instrumentation have significantly increased the demands on support platforms (tripods).  Precision has increased substantially, typical set-up durations are much longer, and efficiency expectations are also greater.  Additionally, today’s instruments tend to be much heavier and have larger wind sail areas.  Torsional load from servo-driven and robotic instruments apply particularly severe loads (Note:  Compensators, including 2-axis, do not correct horizontal drift).

Over the years, conventional tripod designs have essentially remained the same.  The few design changes that have occurred, consisted mainly of several new leg locks, material substitutions, and cost reductions.  Modern requirements, particularly those for substantially increased tripod stability have gone unanswered.

Crain’s revolutionary Tri-Max tripod, stands alone in meeting today’s demanding stability requirements.  In fact, tests have confirmed that the Tri-Max, in many cases, is more than 100 times more stable than conventional tripods, and retains this stability in use, without frequent adjustments, in the face of commonly encountered field conditions such as age, wind, fatigue, contamination, wear, temperature, moisture, and humidity.  What is the direct result of the superior stability that exists in the Tri-Max?  Significant increases in realized accuracy (closure) is not just possible, but common! Unparalled-no other tripod even approaches the Tri-Max’s performance!

To develop the Tri-Max, ultra-modern materials and processes were combined.  This next generation tripod was created using computer aided modeling and analysis techniques.  A unique hinge spindle design permits leg rotation yet prevents lateral movement.  Legs are connected with a rigid adhesive that never loosens regardless of age and environmental exposures.  The entire structure is designed to dampen vibration and resist creep.

Composite extensible legs are formed in a continuous wedge profile that allows more locking force to be developed by hand clamping than conventional tripods develop with their locking systems engaged.  The Tri-Max is not only significantly better than all other tripods; it actually creates a new standard for tripod performance.

Retaining System

A popular feature, the kick out prevention system (standard) is designed to prevent instrument falls on slick surfaces and from persons tripping on a leg.  The system stores on the inside of the leg or can be left in place.  This feature does not interfere with plummeting or instrument person’s stance.  One “save” is all it takes!

Accessories

A number of accessories are available for the Tri-Max Series tripods.  They include leg bags, storage bags, retractable points for finished floors, foot spikes, plates for unstable terrain, and equipment attachment snap-rings.

Advanced Designs

In addition to outstanding stability, the Tri-Max tripods are loaded with other important and practical features.

Tri-Max tripods feature a large, round head that is precision turned.  The mounting hole is also large to aid plummeting.
Snap cap head cover (standard) attaches without screws and has a retainer strap included.
Ergonomic designs include a wide carry strap (standard) with shoulder pad and a carry handle (also standard), which is unique to the Tri-Max and far more comfortable than hole-in-leg handles.
Another Tri-Max exclusive feature is the open leg design, which facilitates mounting of equipment bags, data collectors, batteries, and many other accessories directly to the tripod’s legs.  Removal is not necessary when the tripod is collapsed and stored.  Additionally, convenient utility rings (standard), for attaching accessories, are provided on the center leg caps and on the tripod’s feet.

Tri-Max® Foot

The Tri-Max features a large footbed to better facilitate solid “planting” for stability.  The shape of the foot is designed to solidly engage terrain, is equipped with a replaceable steel point, and is designed to accept a number of unique accessories.  A special applications attachment/retention loop is provided on the rear of the foot.
The foot’s superior strength is clearly demonstrated when it is driven into a log with a sledgehammer, without failure!

Locking Systems

Two new locking systems are available:  Quick Clamp (lever-cam) and Screw Clamp (knob-screw) styles.  Both styles are ergonomic, positive-locking, and field reversible to the inside as shown.  On tall models, an additional thumbscrew style lock is also standard.  A fixed-leg model (collapses for shipping) is also available.  Wedge profile legs can actually lock by hand clamping!  All Tri-Max locking systems are designed to form a single unified rigid instrument platform system.

Unstable Terrain

Tall Tri-Max tripods can be equipped with accessories, which permit stable performance on unstable terrain conditions such as mud, snow, frost, tundra, wetlands, and sand.  Stability is attained by isolation of the tripod feet from the user’s feet, reduction of subsidence, and increased base span.  Only the Tri-Max overcomes these difficult terrain conditions.

Nikon SVR Series® Grade Rods SVR

December 20, 2008

NEW STYLE SVR Series Leveling Rods Nikon SVR Series® Grade Rods SVR

Our SVR Series Leveling Rods have a rectangular-oval shape, flat on the front and back with round corners. This convenient shape prevents the scale from rolling, making observation much easier. The rods are also water-proof, corrosion-resistant, and non-conductive.

The SVR Series rods have a measuring scale on the back (with the exception of the two-scaled rods) that allow the user to read overall height measurements at eye level, which is useful in making clearance and height measurements. Also on the back-side with the measuring scale, there are alternate 1’ red and white markings that are suitable for stadia purposes.

The newly redesigned locking mechanism now features round buttons. Tight and accurate, the lock is specifically designed to resist jamming from sand and dirt.

Disassembly is quick and easy. Simply press the lock buttons and pull the sections out. To further disassemble, a Phillips screwdriver is needed.

The thread in the top section of the SVR is ¼ x 20”, but can be adapted to 5/8 x 11 by purchasing an adapter.

Brackets are needed to attach laser sensors to the SVR Series.

Reading the Measuring Scale: To read the measuring scale on the USL, the height measurement is read at the top of the base section. To read the measuring scale on the New and Original SVR, the height measurement is read at the top of the first unextended section.

Stakemill offers GIS Solutions

January 22, 2008

Is Grid Lock keeping you from work both on the road and inside your office?

Modern metropolitan areas such as the US Interstate System and most of our countries highways are characterized by high traffic volumes and outdated road networks.  The planning of a distribution network for a company that operates a fleet of vehicles or a single vehicle is a task of major importance and undertaking.  Traditional planning methods require a lot of time, money and human resources and deprive the company of the great advantage of speed and flexibility in adjusting its distribution network to the current needs and changes in distribution locations.

  • Thanks to the detailed and up-to-date digital maps and the use of modern GIS tools, Stakemill’s Control Point Instruments is able to offer full support in this field, including: Geocoding of your customer’s database. In case there is need for corrections, further elaboration and normalization of the database, we do all the necessary processing so as to get a complete display of all distribution points.

  • Clustering of distribution sectors according to your demands (maximum route length, maximum number of distribution points, time-distances, truck carrying capacity criteria e.t.c)
  •  Smart route planning and optimization using “intelligent” algorithms, which take into consideration the traffic flow, the road conditions, and applying shortest path or shortest time criteria, including the capability of re-routing in case of blocked road, e.g. due to public works.

Printing each vehicle’s distribution sector and detailed route. Real time tracking is an option via cell phone. We offer solutions either as services or by installing and customizing all the necessary applications and geographical data at your company.
